Galvanize-Rough Cut

Personally i think the rough cut video is 'good' but not at its best standard yet. Even though there is still much more to add on and highlight our editing techniques, there are some shots that need to be either taken out or edited to make it look more stylish and continuous. At the moment it looks simple and implies a sense of amateurism. Conversely, when we add the the rest of the shots and create an impact on the editing to portray the shots slick and up to beat; the music video theme would sit into its place and would be enjoyable to watch.-

I think the rough cut is good but the main problem is that it's unfinished. We need to include a variety of different shot types eg close ups of Jack doing the grafitti, add special effects to give it a class-looking production. The main critism we received from the teachers is that it was unfinished, however they did really like the editing of different locations.

Of course the main problem with our rough cut so far is that it is unfinished.Bearing that in mind,I still feel that it is a solid piece of work.I think the main thing to take away from this cut is the fact that it creates a solid foundation in terms of the sequencing and pacing for our music video. For example the alternating between shots of the graffiti scene,to the shots of our dancer were a result of editing to the beat and seeing what fitted each part of the song the best.It also helped our storyline of the song and this is where the 'pacing' comes in.So far the first minute and a half of Galvanize is building up to a slow paced 'drop' in the middle in which the speed of the music changes drastically. To contrast with our fast paced editing in the beginning, we are planning to use our footage of the bellydancer in the middle. We are most likely going to add some effects to this sequence,so far we are thinking either/both slow motion and a strobe light effect to make the shots feel as though they were coming from a lively club. This also acts as a mechanism to make people forget about our shots of me spraying graffiti from earlier on,so when we go back to them towards the the second half of the video, they will feel more fresh in the minds of the viewer. This diversity of shots and locations we stop the video from getting stale halfway through. We have the amount of filming we did to thank for this.

The main criticism we have received so far from our teachers have been about the sequence towards the end, from about 1:14 to 1:29.Although the concept is good and I think it fits in well with the pace and feel of the video, the shots here last a bit too long and will need to be edited. This is an editing issue, not a  footage issue,so this should be an easy fix.Perhaps we could start by playing around with the order of the shots a bit more and experiment with it.

Inspiration-Madonna

We watched a couple of different music videos that features dancing in a club to gain inspiration for the dancing segments of our own video. These are some screenshots from Madonna's video for her song 'Hung up'.

We took these screenshots because they show how movement can be captured brilliantly through the use of a variety of shot types and angles.

These shots have a voyeuristic tone, almost as if the person filming is spying on Madonna.
You can see objects and shapes partly obscuring the view which leads the viewer to believe Madonna is being spied on.Its a subtle effect but it works well when combined with the more louder shots in this sequence.

There is alot of movement in this sequence in the video. The camera pans alot and moves with Madonna as she is spinning and twirling. You get the feeling the cameraperson is dancing along with her.
This is another voyeur shot.Notice how Madonna's face is looking completely the other way into the mirror. In all the other shots her face is one of the key points in the mise en scene of the sequence.
The low angle shots as Madonna works her way towards the camera work really well here. This is because they contrast well with the mid-long shots and voyeur shots that make up the rest of the sequence.

Madonnas music videos are a great source of inspiration in terms of filming dance. We hope to use some of these techniques when filming the belly dancer at the Darbucka club. In our clip we will use slow motion body movement of the belly dancer tilting from down and upwards. We will be rotating the camera around the belly dancer with close ups of her body and low angle shots. The use of tripod wheels would help here but will probably be impractical in a club. The other video we watched was 'Sorry'.
